An annual event run by the Oldham team on the first weekend in May. It was introduced to stimulate an exchange of ideas throughout mountain rescue and other emergency services.
The team started this event in 1981 when the team recognised their uniquely privileged position, of being able to develop their ideas on rescue techniques and equipment, through their close links with Troll Safety Equipment Limited. The aim was simply to share the ideas.
Originally the course was only open to members of mountain rescue teams from England and Wales, civilian or military and HM Coastguard cliff rescue companies. However, for the last few years teams from Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic Ireland have attended. The event is open to members of all of the United Kingdom’s statutory emergency services with places being regularly taken by police, fire and ambulance services.
The weekend is aimed at experienced mountain rescue personnel, with reasonable rock climbing ability because the seminar concentrates on a variety of cliff rescue techniques and includes hillside exercises. Participants will need to bring their normal hill kit including, as a minimum, helmet, suitable harness, 1 x 8ft sling and 3 x screw gate karabiners.
The practical sessions are based in the Chew Valley area on a variety of natural and quarried rock faces around the valley. The cost for 2012 is £75.00 per person for members of voluntary search and rescue teams and £170.00 per person for all other organisations. Payments from overseas must be by sterling bankers draft. The cost includes two nights hostel style (a sleeping bag is required), full cooked breakfasts, packed lunches and a full evening meal on Saturday and transport between locations.
